We have more news on GERD from the VA! Recently, the VA defined what imaging types can be used to identify esophageal stricture. We'll go over what that means, each type of approved imaging tests, and everything you need to know about getting a 10% rating while only using medication for GERD. Let's dive in:
What is esophageal stricture in relation to GERD?
Esophageal stricture is basically a medical way of saying the narrowing of the esophagus. When someone has GERD long-term, the frequent stomach acid exposure to the esophagus causes irritation and damage to the esophageal lining. As the body heals, scar tissue can develop and cause narrowing of the esophagus.
These are symptoms of esophageal stricture caused by GERD:
Difficulty swallowing
Painful swallowing
Regurgitation
Weight loss
Veterans can now earn 10% for GERD on daily meds alone
And now, the good news: In the VA's M21-1 section v.iii.6.2.b, it now states that "A diagnosis of GERD for SC purposes does not require documentation by medical imaging."
This is great news for veterans! Before, veterans who were only on daily meds would earn 0% – now it's possible to earn 10% with only daily meds and no testing or imaging.
For a rating above 10%, which imaging types can be used to identify stricture?
Documented proof of esophageal stricture is required to earn above 10% on a VA disability benefits claim for GERD. To prove it, you'll need to take a test – and now you can choose between 3 types. The VA recently specified these three types are approved:
Computed Tomography Test (CT scan). A CT scan uses x-rays and computer technology to capture images of the inside of the body.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). An EGD test uses an endoscope (a camera on the end of a tube) to assess the inner structure of the esophagus.
Barium swallow test. A barium swallow test uses x-rays coupled with barium (that is swallowed, hence the name) to clearly depict details of the upper GI tract.
